Nyíregyháza Zoo is a zoological park in the Sóstó recreation area of Nyíregyháza, Hungary, set within 30 hectares of oak forest. The site holds around 5,000 animals from roughly 500 species in enclosures that recreate natural environments and are separated by water ditches.
The site opened in 1974 under the name Nyíregyházi Vadaspark with the goal of showing native Hungarian animal species. After 1996, director László Gajdos expanded the grounds considerably and introduced new international species along with modern design concepts.
The name comes from the location in the Sóstó forest area, used as a recreation spot for generations. Visitors today experience recreated habitats with water ditches instead of bars, allowing animals more freedom and making observation feel more natural.
Admission for adults costs 7,500 forints, while children aged three to 14 pay 600 forints, with reduced rates for students, seniors, and groups. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the extensive forest site involves long walking paths and some sections may have inclines.
The Green Pyramid and Oceanarium contain a 500,000-liter glass corridor where visitors walk among sharks and observe marine life up close. Additionally, a wax museum on the grounds displays the stages of human evolution in life-size representations.
