Archeparchy of Hajdúdorog

The Archeparchy of Hajdúdorog is a Greek Catholic ecclesiastical territory with its administrative headquarters at Petőfi Square 8 in Debrecen. The office functions within a former hotel building and oversees the parishes of an Eastern-influenced faith community across northeastern Hungary.

Pope Pius X established this bishopric in 1912 as an independent ecclesiastical territory for the Hungarian-speaking Greek Catholic population. The communities grew rapidly throughout the industrialized regions of northeastern Hungary.

The churches here display an Eastern tradition with colorful windows and elaborate altar decorations rooted in Byzantine heritage. These design choices reflect the history of a faith community that bridges Eastern and Western Christianity.

The administrative office is located in central Debrecen on a main square, making it easy to find and access. Keep in mind this is an active administrative center, so standard business hours apply for any visits or inquiries.

A distinctive feature of this church community is that many of its priests are married, a practice that sets it apart from traditional Catholic practice. This custom originates from Eastern Church tradition and fundamentally distinguishes the Greek Catholic Church from the Latin Church.
