Castle of Máré, Medieval castle ruins in Baranya County, Hungary.
Castle of Máré is a medieval hilltop ruin near the village of Kovácsszénája in Baranya County, southern Hungary. The remaining stone walls, tower bases, and vaulted sections form a compact layout typical of highland fortresses built in this part of the country.
The castle was built in the 13th century and changed hands among noble families across the following centuries. After the Ottoman campaigns of the 16th and 17th centuries passed through the region, it was abandoned and slowly fell into ruin.
The name Máré likely comes from a medieval landowner who once held this territory, tying the place directly to a single family's story. Visitors who walk the site today can still read the layout of power in the way the walls command the valley below.
The ruin is only reachable on foot since there is no vehicle access to the hilltop. The walk up is short but steep, so wear sturdy shoes as the ground is uneven and some sections of the walls are exposed.
Part of the fortification included underground passages that connected different defensive sections, allowing soldiers to move without being seen from outside. Only portions of these tunnels survive today, but they hint at how layered the original defense system was.
