Leixlip Spa

Leixlip Spa, Historical spring site in County Kildare, Ireland.

Leixlip Spa is a historical wellness complex near the Royal Canal featuring a hexagonal spring well and a Romanesque bath building. The remains of these structures show how the natural warm spring was channeled for bathing and the architectural style of early Irish spa facilities.

The warm mineral spring was discovered in 1794 while building the Royal Canal, which prompted the creation of a wellness retreat that operated for about two decades. Though the spa eventually closed, its underground structures survived and now form part of the area's heritage.

The site is part of the Great Famine Heritage Trail, where sculptures commemorate the stories of people who emigrated during Ireland's famine period. Visitors walking through can encounter these memorials and connect with this important chapter of Irish history.

The archaeological remains are visible on site and can be explored while walking along the Royal Canal. Wear comfortable shoes and allow time to examine the structures and any information markers placed at the location.

The natural warm spring at this location is one of very few in Ireland, making it geologically unusual for the island. Its discovery was entirely accidental during canal construction and could easily have been missed if work had not taken place exactly at that spot.
