The square, designed by architect Genia Averbuch in the 1940s, commemorates the 1942 Struma ship disaster where Jewish refugees perished in the Black Sea.

The memorial monument, installed in 1968, serves as a gathering place for annual ceremonies remembering the victims of the Struma ship tragedy.

The roundabout provides access to major transportation routes, with multiple bus stops and pedestrian crossings connecting different parts of Holon.

The original sunken design of the square invited visitors to descend into the space until the 1990s renovation raised it to street level.
