Bilaspur, Administrative center in Chhattisgarh, India
Bilaspur is a major administrative and commercial center in Chhattisgarh state, serving as home to the South East Central Railway Zone headquarters. The city spreads along the Arpa River and includes residential neighborhoods, market streets, and industrial zones with cement plants.
British administration took control of the area in 1818 following the Third Anglo-Maratha War and began developing public institutions. Between 1880 and 1890, the city became a major railway junction, shaping its economic rise.
The city takes its name from the Kalyanchuri ruling family and sits along the Arpa River, where women in colorful saris sometimes gather by the water. Local craftspeople still work traditional silk looms in small workshops, producing fabrics sold at nearby markets.
The district capital houses the Chhattisgarh High Court in Bodri and is accessible by road or rail from various parts of the state. Visitors find well-developed infrastructure with hotels, restaurants, and local markets selling rice and handwoven textiles.
The temperature can drop to 3 or 4 degrees Celsius (37 to 39 degrees Fahrenheit) in December, making the city one of the coolest places in the region. This cold snap surprises many visitors who expect consistently warm weather in central India.
