Chandrapur, Commercial district in Maharashtra, India
Chandrapur is a city in eastern Maharashtra that stretches along the Wardha River, surrounded by coal mines and power plants. Streets lead through residential areas with small shops and workshops that alternate with industrial facilities.
The Gond dynasty ruled here from the 12th to the 18th century and made the place their capital. After their decline the Marathas took control and integrated the region into their growing territory.
The name comes from a nearby ancient temple dedicated to the deity Chandra, still visited today. In residential neighborhoods you see houses with covered courtyards where families share meals and gather in the evening.
The area is best visited between October and February when temperatures are more comfortable than during the hot summer. Those walking through the city find markets and neighborhoods reachable on foot, while rickshaws can be used for longer distances.
Below the surface the Erai and Zarpat rivers meet while above them lie extensive coal deposits that gave the city its nickname. People call it the city of black gold because of these underground treasures.
