Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, International airport in Shamshabad, India
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is an international airport in Shamshabad, roughly 15 miles south of Hyderabad. The facility has two runways and a multilevel terminal building with international and domestic processing areas.
The airport opened in March 2008 as a greenfield project built through a public-private partnership, replacing the former Begumpet Airport. The construction aimed to handle growing air traffic in the region.
The terminal displays art forms and craftsmanship from Telangana through detailed metalwork and stone carvings. Visitors encounter this regional character as soon as they enter the main hall, where local design shapes the international setting.
The terminal has numerous check-in counters, immigration desks and lounges that handle a large number of passengers every day. Travelers should allow enough time as the facility is large and the location is some distance from the city center.
The cargo area includes a temperature-controlled pharma zone specially built for shipping pharmaceutical products from the region. This facility supports the local pharmaceutical industry and uses cold chain infrastructure.
