The Saraswathi Mahal Library, established during the reign of the Nayak of Madurai, is one of the oldest libraries in Asia.
Originally built by the Nayaks of Tanjore, it was completed and significantly expanded under the Thanjavur Maratha kingdom.
This library has a vast collection of over 60,000 manuscripts and printed volumes in Indian and European languages.
It's open to public six days a week, except on national holidays.
Preserves many medieval works and documents, like complex medical manuscripts.
