Sassoon Hospital, Public hospital in Pune, India
Sassoon General Hospital is a public hospital and medical teaching facility in Pune that works together with B. J. Medical College. The complex includes numerous departments and wards spread across several buildings grouped around a large main structure.
The facility began operations in 1867, funded by a generous donation from David Sassoon, a businessman and benefactor from Mumbai. Over the decades, the institution developed into a center for medical care and training in the region.
The facility serves as a training ground for future doctors and maintains a long tradition of caring for the city's population. Its name recalls the generosity of a family who practiced social responsibility across religious boundaries.
Access is available through several entrances, with the emergency ward having its own separate area. Visiting times and access to different departments are organized to avoid disrupting the teaching operations.
Mahatma Gandhi underwent an appendectomy here on January 12, 1924, connecting the institution to the history of the Indian independence movement. The operation took place during one of his prison terms and sparked public discussions about his health.
