Chandragiri Fort, Hilltop fort in Chandragiri, Andhra Pradesh, India

Chandragiri Fort is a hilltop fortification in Chandragiri town within Andhra Pradesh state. The complex contains two palaces, Raja Mahal and Rani Mahal, built with octagonal pillars and arched windows showing Indo-Saracenic design elements.

The Yadavas built the fortification during the 11th century, later serving as the fourth capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. The relocation occurred after attacks by Golconda sultans on the earlier capital Penukonda.

The Raja Mahal within the compound functions as an archaeological museum displaying finds from the Vijayanagara period. Visitors can walk through rooms featuring octagonal pillars and arched openings that reflect Indo-Saracenic architecture.

The site opens daily and guided tours are offered at the entrance in several languages. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes for walking between the palaces and along the fortification walls.

Representatives of the British East India Company signed the agreement here in August 1639 to acquire land for Fort Saint George. This transaction laid the foundation for later British presence in Madras, now Chennai.
