Madina Mosque, Shillong

The Madina Mosque is a mosque with a striking glass structure featuring a central dome, four smaller domes, and minarets in Laban. The building extends 121 meters in length and 61 meters in width, with four stories designed to accommodate around 8,000 worshippers in separate prayer areas for different groups.

The mosque was constructed by the Shillong Muslim Union, an organization established in 1905 to support the Muslim community in the region. Building took place in the early 2010s, representing a modern chapter in Islamic architecture within the area.

The mosque serves as a center for the Muslim community in Meghalaya, housing an Islamic library and a theological institute for religious learning. The complex also includes an orphanage, showing how the site supports people beyond just prayer.

Workers from Coochbehar in West Bengal, many of whom followed Hindu traditions, played a key role in building this mosque. Their craftsmanship and participation demonstrate an noteworthy cooperation between different faith communities on this construction project.
