Pithapuram Temple

Pithapuram Temple, Ancient Hindu temple complex in Pithapuram, India

Pithapuram Temple, also known as Kukkuteswara Temple, is a shrine complex with multiple sanctuaries and sculptured stone elements spread across the grounds in East Godavari district. The layout includes water tanks, courtyards, and carved pillars that visitors walk through to reach the main prayer halls.

The site took shape as a temple in ancient times when Pithapuram, formerly called Pishtapura, served as a capital for various Andhra kingdoms around the 4th century. This historical importance as a ruling center helped establish its status as a major religious site.

This site holds significance as one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peeths across the Hindu world, drawing pilgrims who come to honor the goddess and perform daily rituals. You will notice devotees moving through the courtyards with flowers and offerings, following customs passed down through generations.

The temple grounds offer air-conditioned rooms for visitors who wish to stay overnight during their pilgrimage or visit. Transportation to the site is convenient via the Chennai-Howrah railway line, which connects major cities in the surrounding region.

Within the temple grounds lie three sacred spots called Shiro Gaya, Nabi Gaya, and Pada Gaya where devotees perform Pinda Pradanam, a ritual honoring deceased family members. These three locations hold deep personal meaning for those who practice this tradition.
