Adolf-Hitler-Geburtshaus, Birth house in Braunau am Inn, Austria

The building at Salzburger Vorstadt 15 is a three-story townhouse in Braunau am Inn, Austria, constructed in Biedermeier style with cream-colored walls and barred ground-floor windows. The facade displays typical features of 19th-century middle-class housing, including symmetrical window arrangements and simple proportions.

On April 20, 1889, Adolf Hitler was born in a second-floor apartment where his family lived until 1891 before relocating to Linz. The Nazi Party acquired the property in 1938 and converted it into a cultural center, while post-war authorities repurposed it as a library and school.

The memorial outside carries an inscription warning against war and totalitarianism, placed there to remind visitors of the consequences of hatred. Local residents pass the building daily without ceremony, treating it as part of the ordinary street rather than a pilgrimage site.

The Austrian Interior Ministry controls the building and plans to convert it into a police station to discourage gatherings by extremist groups. Access to the interior is not possible, but the street remains publicly accessible and the memorial stone is always visible.

After 1945, the property changed hands several times and served as a library, bank branch, and workshop for people with disabilities. The Austrian government expropriated it in 2016 following a decades-long legal dispute with the owner, who had refused any use of the space.
