Hitler birthplace memorial stone

The memorial stone stands outside the building at Salzburger Vorstadt 15, displaying engraved German text on a polished granite surface. The block rises roughly to adult height on the sidewalk, making the inscription easy to read as people walk past.

Austria placed the stone in 1989 to acknowledge the history of the building where Adolf Hitler was born in 1889. The decision marked a new willingness by the country to address its role during the Nazi era and to honor those murdered by the regime.

The granite used for this memorial came from the quarry at the former Mauthausen Concentration Camp, where thousands of prisoners were forced to work under brutal conditions. This choice of material links the memorial directly to one of the places where the crimes of the regime took place.
