Braunau am Inn, Border municipality in Upper Austria, Austria
Braunau am Inn is a border town in Upper Austria that extends along the Inn between Austria and Bavaria. Several bridges connect the town center with the opposite Bavarian municipality of Simbach, with the river forming the natural national boundary.
The settlement was first documented in 1120 as Prounaw and received town rights in 1260. During the Middle Ages the place developed into an important trading post for salt transport on the Inn, which led to economic growth.
The late Romanesque town fountain from the 16th century stands on the central square and recalls the tradition of public water supply. On market days locals gather under the arcades of the old town, which have sheltered shops and inns for centuries.
The historic town center can be easily explored on foot, with most sights within short walking distance of each other. Parking areas are located on the edge of the old town, from where you can easily reach the center.
The local museum preserves a bell foundry workshop from 1385 with original tools and equipment from medieval metalworking. The wooden casting molds and forging tools show the craft techniques of that era.
