Glatthorn, Mountain summit in Bregenzerwald, Austria
Glatthorn is a mountain summit in the Bregenzerwald region of Vorarlberg, sitting at approximately 2,100 meters high. The route to the top passes through alpine meadows and rocky terrain, with views expanding as you climb higher.
Routes crossing Glatthorn were established in the 19th century when local farmers needed paths to move cattle between valleys. These mountain trails have been maintained and used by shepherds and farmers over many generations.
Local mountain guides maintain traditional knowledge of Glatthorn's paths, sharing stories of Alpine farming practices with visiting hikers.
The hike starts from a low point in the valley and follows marked trails that lead steadily upward, taking around three and a half hours to reach the summit. Make sure to wear proper hiking boots and bring a jacket, as weather conditions can change quickly at higher elevations.
The eastern ridge has fixed ropes and anchors installed to help climbers navigate the steeper sections near the summit. These safety aids make the final approach safer without requiring advanced technical climbing skills.
