Geriatriezentrum Lainz, Former hospital complex in Hietzing, Vienna, Austria.
The Geriatriezentrum Lainz is a former hospital complex in the Hietzing district of Vienna, made up of 29 red brick pavilions and a twin-towered church. The buildings are spread across a large site and connected by a network of pathways that wind between the structures.
The complex opened in 1904 and was built to care for a large number of patients from the start. It served as a military hospital during both World Wars before being reorganized in the 1920s to add a nursing school and separate medical cases from long-term residents.
The red brick buildings are protected as a cultural monument and the site still functions as a care center today. Walking between the pavilions, visitors notice how the layout was designed to feel open and human in scale, with green paths connecting each building.
The site is large, so wear comfortable shoes and set aside enough time to walk between the pavilions at a relaxed pace. Some areas may be restricted as the facility is still active, so it is worth checking access conditions before visiting.
Until 2011, a narrow gauge field railway ran across the grounds every day carrying food and supplies between the pavilions. This made the site one of the last places in Austria where that kind of internal railway was still in daily use.
