Geriatriezentrum Lainz, Former hospital complex in Hietzing, Vienna, Austria.
The Geriatriezentrum Lainz is a former hospital complex in Hietzing with 29 pavilions and a church with twin towers standing 54 meters tall. The buildings are constructed from red brick and form a large, interconnected area with pathways running between them.
The center opened in 1904 with hundreds of beds and served as a military hospital during World War II. During the 1920s it was restructured to separate medical patients from general residents and to add a nursing education program.
The complex shows brickwork from the early 1900s and is protected as a cultural monument. Walking through, you notice how the architecture of that era connected human needs with practical design.
The grounds are large and require time to explore, so wear comfortable shoes and allow adequate time for your visit. Walking is the best way to discover the various pavilions and the church at your own pace.
Until 2011, the site operated one of Austria's longest-running field railway systems with a narrow gauge track. This small railway carried food and supplies across the grounds every day and is now part of the site's local story.
