Versorgungsheimkirche, Romanesque Revival church in Lainz, Vienna, Austria

The Versorgungsheimkirche hl. Karl Borromäus is a Neo-Romanesque brick basilica with twin towers built to double height and slightly projecting, reached by a triple-stepped open staircase. Its three-aisled, five-bay nave has an open roof truss, and a three-arched arcade with a tracery-balustraded terrace links the towers. The church sits on the central axis of a four-row pavilion system, flanked by administrative wings.

The church of St. Charles Borromeo was built between 1902 and 1904 as the institutional church of the Lainz care home, planned by the Vienna City Building Office under Rudolf Helmreich and Johann Nepomuk Scheiringer and erected under Mayor Karl Lueger. It forms the central axis of a four-tiered pavilion system, with the kitchen, further administrative buildings and the former monastery closing the axis behind it. The former monastery chapel and the mortuary with its domed Protestant consecration chapel at the northern edge are no longer in liturgical use.

The church is dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo, to whom the figures in the round-arched niches of the tower front are devoted, carved by Hans Rathausky. The walls and the parapet of the organ gallery carry the coats of arms of Viennese guilds painted by Hans Seidler, and the tympanum of the main portal holds a Holy Family mosaic made by the Tyrolean stained-glass workshop.

The building is accessible through the main entrance of the Lainz Geriatric Center complex and is used for regular religious services. Access passes through the medical facility, so visitors should politely inquire upon arrival.

The church's front gable carries a zinc-cast angel by Josef Heu, and the tracery of the main facade is held by bronze busts of figures connected with the building of the church, carved by Georg Leisek. The organ, housed in a Neo-Romanesque case, was made by Franz Josef Swoboda in 1905.
