Rheindelta, Nature reserve at Lake Constance, Austria.
The Rheindelta is a nature reserve with wetlands, meadows, and ancient willow groves where the Rhine River enters Lake Constance. Across approximately 2,065 hectares, different habitats meet - reed beds alternate with open water and wooded areas.
The area became a protected zone in 1976, marking the first official conservation designation of its kind in the Vorarlberg region. This decision set an important precedent for nature protection across the wider area.
The area spans four municipalities working together to care for the landscape, reflecting the region's commitment to preserving this special place. Locals use the trails regularly and participate in protecting this habitat as part of their community identity.
The reserve has marked walking trails and observation points for visitors, though some areas close from October to March during bird breeding season. It is helpful to check current access rules before your visit, as open zones may change depending on the time of year.
The reserve serves as a critical stopover point for migrating birds, with more than 300 bird species passing through twice yearly. Visitors are often surprised by the sheer variety of flowering plants and ferns found here in such concentrated numbers.
