Hagener Hütte, Mountain hut in Mallnitz, Austria.
Hagener Hütte is a mountain hut located at 2446 meters elevation within Hohe Tauern National Park, situated in a stark alpine landscape. Views stretch toward the surrounding Ankogel and Goldberg mountain ranges that frame the hut.
Built in December 1912, the hut stands on an ancient route once traveled by Celts and Romans. This pathway connected the Mallnitzer Tauerntal with the Gasteiner Nassfeld region.
The Aschbacher family has run the hut since 1967, preparing traditional Carinthian dishes each day. These meals are made with ingredients sourced directly from local producers in the surrounding valley.
The shelter accommodates 52 guests in various room types, including private rooms, dormitories, and a heated winter room with shower facilities. Visitors should know that reaching the hut requires a challenging hike and good physical fitness.
The hut operates without helicopter supply runs and instead relies on the warden using a tractor for provisions. The warden makes this supply journey twice weekly from the valley, sustaining the hut's self-reliant operations.
