Hindenburghöhe, Mountain summit in Mallnitz, Austria
Hindenburghöhe is a mountain summit in the Ankogel Group of the Carinthian Alps reaching 2,315 meters elevation. The main and subsidiary peaks are distinguished by separate historical names, with a stone monument constructed on the lower subsidiary peak.
The mountain was originally called Liskelesspitze and received its current name in 1915 following a request from the Hannover section of the German-Austrian Alpine Association. This renaming occurred during a period when mountain nomenclature often reflected political and military influences.
The monument on the subsidiary peak dates from 1923 and carries a memorial plaque honoring a historical figure. The stone stands at this exposed elevation as a quiet testament to early mountain culture.
The ascent from Tauerntal valley via the Wittener path takes roughly 4 hours and crosses forest trails and rocky terrain. Hikers should expect variable mountain weather and wear sturdy footwear, as the route becomes steep and exposed in places.
The main summit now carries its original name Liesgelespitz again, while only the lower subsidiary peak retained the Hindenburghöhe designation. This split in names echoes the mountain's history and how its identity changed over time.
