Ankogelbahn, Cable car system in Mallnitz, Austria.
Ankogelbahn is a cable car system in Mallnitz that transports visitors from the valley to Ankogel peak at 2636 meters elevation. The journey unfolds in two sections with multiple cabins that work together to provide continuous access to the summit.
The current cable car system was built in 1993, replacing an earlier aerial tramway that held only 30 people, to increase transport capacity for the region. This upgrade allowed the valley to serve significantly more visitors each day.
The cable car links visitors to the alpine way of life that still shapes this valley, where mountain traditions and local customs remain part of daily routines. From the peak, the proximity to the Italian border becomes clear, reflecting how this region sits between two cultures.
The ride moves smoothly with two clearly separated sections, giving visitors time to enjoy the views along the way. The total ascent takes about 7 minutes, making it manageable for most people regardless of fitness level.
The system uses an unusual setup: the first section runs two cabins while the second section operates three cabins. This particular design allows the lift to maintain consistent frequency even as mountain conditions and visitor demand change throughout the day.
