Hannoverhaus, Alpine club hut in Mallnitz, Austria.
Hannoverhaus is an Alpine club hut in the Mölltal area of Hohe Tauern National Park in Austria, close to the Ankogel mountain station. It sits at an elevation of 2,565 meters (8,415 feet) and has fourteen rooms with different sleeping arrangements for mountaineers.
The hut was founded in 1888 and served from the start as a base for mountaineers at high elevation. After more than a century of use, it went through a major renovation in 2012 and 2013 to bring its facilities up to date.
The restaurant at Hannoverhaus serves regional dishes like Germknödel, and a tiled stove keeps the dining room warm. The place shows what traditional Alpine hospitality looks like: simple, warm, and built around the needs of mountaineers.
The hut opens twice a year, once for the winter season and once for summer, so it is worth checking which season suits your plans before making the trip. The high elevation means some alpine experience and good physical condition are needed before heading up.
Just beside the hut stands the Arnold Mausoleum at 2,720 meters (8,924 feet), a structure under monument protection. It holds the distinction of being the highest protected building of its kind in all of Austria.
