Martinekkaserne, Protected heritage barracks in Baden, Austria.
The Martinekkaserne is a former military facility in Baden comprising single and two-story structures arranged at right angles. The buildings feature gable roofs and a segmental arch entrance on the northeast side.
Construction of the military complex began in 1938 under architect Leo Splett, designed to house around 2000 personnel. World War II disrupted completion, though the site continued serving military purposes afterward.
The barracks were named in 1963 after Artillery General Robert Martinek, reflecting their connection to Austrian military service. This naming honors a significant figure in the country's armed forces.
The barracks extend across the municipal boundaries of both Sooß and Baden as a protected heritage site. The location is visible from the outside but offers limited public access to the interior grounds.
The site narrowly escaped destruction at the end of World War II when a local resistance fighter prevented the SA from demolishing it. This episode shows how close the complex came to being entirely lost.
