Pirchkogel, Alpine summit in Tyrol, Austria
Pirchkogel is an alpine summit in Tyrol reaching 2,828 meters with several small mountain lakes and a plateau called Schwarzmoos at its base. The surroundings show a typical high alpine landscape with meadows, lakes, and different routes leading to the peak.
The area has been a site for ecological research since 1933, focusing on water systems and changes in the high alpine landscape. Research over the decades has shown how this mountain region has transformed under various environmental influences.
The meadows here still show signs of use by sheep and cattle that have shaped the vegetation for centuries. You can clearly see in the landscape how the animals form the grasslands and which plants can survive at this altitude.
Hikers often start from Kuhta and follow steep paths to the Schwarzmoos lakes before taking one of several established routes to the summit. The trails are well-marked, but you should expect high alpine conditions and bring proper equipment.
Instead of a traditional summit cross, there is a signal post at the peak. Nearby sits Gossenköllesee at 2,413 meters, which serves as an ecological research station.
