Zwölferkogel, Mountain summit in Tyrol, Austria
Zwölferkogel is a mountain summit in the Ötztal Alps in Tyrol, Austria, rising to just under 3,000 meters. The north face drops steeply, while the approach from the south, through the Zwölferkar cirque, follows a more gradual line up to the top.
The first documented ascents of Zwölferkogel used routes through the Finstertal valley and the Zwölferkar cirque, paths that were already known to 19th-century mountaineers. The growth of the nearby Kühtai resort in the 20th century made the area easier to reach for a wider range of visitors.
The name Zwölferkogel refers to the number twelve, likely tied to old local naming traditions in the Ötztal Alps. Climbers who reach the top often continue along the ridge toward other peaks in the area, treating it as part of a longer mountain day.
The most common starting point is the Kühtai resort, where trails lead toward the summit from well-marked trailheads. Weather at this elevation can shift quickly, so an early start and solid mountain gear are both worth planning for.
The Finstertalspeicher reservoir sits just below the summit and is part of one of the highest-placed hydroelectric systems in Austria. Looking down at the water from the upper slopes gives a clear sense of how remote mountain terrain has been put to work for energy production.
