Rietzer Grießkogel, Mountain summit in Northern Sellrain Mountains, Austria
Rietzer Grießkogel is a mountain summit in the Northern Sellrain Mountains, a section of the Stubai Alps in Austria. At 2,884 meters in elevation, it stands as the highest peak in this range and offers expansive views across the surrounding alpine terrain.
Botanist Andrä Sauter from Innsbruck made the first documented ascent of this peak in 1829. This achievement marked an important milestone in Alpine exploration and mountaineering activities in the region during the early 19th century.
The mountain takes its name from the village of Rietz, which sits at its base to the north. Visitors can see how locals have named peaks after nearby settlements following a tradition that reflects the connection between communities and their surrounding landscape.
Access is via marked trails, with route 153 starting from Peter Anich Hut and requiring about 3.5 hours of hiking. The path is well-marked, but hikers should be prepared for alpine terrain and changing weather conditions at elevation.
The mountain is composed of Ötztal Gneiss, specifically a strong biotite-granite gneiss formation. This rock composition creates more favorable climbing conditions compared to other Alpine formations in the region.
