Art/Brut Center Gugging, Art Brut museum in Maria Gugging, Austria
Art/Brut Center Gugging is an art museum in Maria Gugging, Lower Austria, dedicated to works made by people outside the formal art world. The site brings together exhibition spaces, an artist residential house, and studios, all connected on a single grounds.
The center opened in 2006 on the grounds of a former psychiatric clinic where patients began making art in the 1970s. That early creative activity gradually led to wider recognition and, eventually, to the founding of this institution.
The artists living and working here developed their expression without art school training or outside influence. Their works show personal worlds that grew from their own inner experience rather than from any artistic tradition or movement.
The site covers several distinct areas, so it is worth leaving enough time to move between the gallery, the studios, and the residential house. Good walking shoes help, as the different parts of the grounds are spread across an outdoor setting.
The artists living in the on-site residential house sell their works directly through the gallery next door and earn their own income from it. This means that a painting on display may have been finished just days before by someone who still lives a short walk away.
