Art/Brut Center Gugging

Art/Brut Center Gugging is a museum in Maria Gugging, Austria, that focuses on artistic creations made by people outside formal art training. The center displays roughly 1300 square meters of exhibition space with works from various artists across different periods and approaches.

The center was founded in 2006 and occupies the grounds of a former psychiatric clinic where patients began creating artwork in the 1970s. This early phase developed into a movement that later led to this institutional recognition and public visibility.

The artists who live and work here come from outside the traditional art world and developed their expression through their own paths. Their creations show personal worlds that emerged from inner impulses rather than from academic training or art school.

The grounds include several spaces such as an artist residential house, a gallery, and studios that all function together. Visitors should plan enough time to explore the different areas and learn about the working environments of the artists.

The artists living in the residential house sell their works directly through the on-site gallery and generate their own income. This creates a vibrant and authentic setting where art creation and sales are directly connected.
