Lourdesgrotte, Wienerwald

The Lourdesgrotte is a religious pilgrimage shrine in Klosterneuburg nestled within a natural rock formation in a woodland setting. Inside stand a marble statue of the Virgin Mary and a representation of Saint Bernadette Soubirous.

The shrine was built between 1923 and 1925 under the direction of Father Caspar Hutter as a replica of the French Lourdes Grotto. Its opening attracted thousands of faithful gathered to pray together at this newly established sanctuary.

The site mirrors devotion practices found at the original French sanctuary and draws visitors who come to pray quietly or walk the rosary-decorated Way of the Cross. The design reflects the veneration that unfolds throughout the place.

The site sits at the edge of a woodland and is accessible on foot, though sturdy shoes are advisable for the uneven terrain. A small devotional shop is on-site, and the location is generally open to visitors throughout the year.

The wrought iron entrance grille is an exact reproduction of the original gate from the French Lourdes sanctuary, creating a direct connection between the two pilgrimage sites. This handcrafted detail reveals the meticulous reconstruction undertaken during construction.
