Europakapelle, Protected heritage chapel near Europabrücke rest area, Schönberg im Stubaital, Austria.
Europakapelle is a protected heritage chapel located near the Europa Bridge at a rest area near Schönberg im Stubaital, Austria. The building has a diamond-shaped floor plan, a gallery accessed by a large staircase, and a sliding glass wall that divides the interior space.
The Tyrolean Parliament decided on February 9, 1960 to build this monument near the Europa Bridge. Architect Hubert Prachensky completed construction in 1963.
The altar sits behind a rear window framing the Europa Bridge in the view. This place serves as a memorial for workers who died during highway construction.
A footpath from the adjacent parking area leads up to the chapel, which sits about 130 feet (40 meters) above the highway level. The walk uphill is steep but straightforward and takes just a few minutes.
Frescoes created by artist Karl Plattner cover both interior and exterior walls of the building. These painted works give the chapel a distinct artistic character that catches visitors by surprise.
