Meidlinger Trainkaserne, Military barracks in Meidling, Austria.
The Meidlinger Trainkaserne is a military facility in Vienna's 12th district with two distinct building complexes: an administrative headquarters on Ruckergasse and residential structures with attached stables and storage areas. The entire layout was designed to house cavalry units and their equipment.
The barracks were built between 1904 and 1906 under the design of architect Wenzel König and were originally planned to accommodate 600 soldiers, 400 horses, and over 1000 wagons. Since its founding, it has served different security authorities, starting with the Austrian Army through to its current use by federal agencies.
The eastern section housed the regional gendarmerie command, while the western wing carries the name of two officers who resisted Nazi rule. These designations reflect how the site preserves local memory and past resistance.
The complex is located near Wien Meidling train station and is easily accessible by public transport. Today it houses several security agencies, which means visitor access may be restricted to the exterior.
The construction of this barracks required the removal of Vienna's last vineyard in the Meidling area during the early 1900s. This land, once part of Vienna's winemaking heritage, was permanently transformed into military grounds.
