Salzburger Barockmuseum, Baroque art museum in Mirabell Castle, Austria
The Salzburger Barockmuseum displays sketches, models, and drawings that artists created while preparing their major works. Located in the North Oratory of Salzburg Cathedral, the collection allows visitors to follow the creative process behind significant Baroque masterpieces.
The museum was founded in 1973 based on a private collection donated by Kurt and Else Rossacher to the city of Salzburg. After relocating from the Orangery building in 2012, the collection found a new home in the Cathedral complex.
The collection displays preparatory works by renowned artists such as Rubens, Bernini, and Tiepolo, representing different European artistic traditions. These pieces offer insight into how Baroque masters planned and developed their major commissions.
Visiting allows you to study the different stages of artistic creation at a comfortable pace. The selected works are arranged clearly, making it easier to understand the development from concept to final design.
The museum holds nearly 400 works, including oil paintings, wooden and clay models, and graphic pieces that show how artists visualized their ideas. These documents of the creative process are rarely seen elsewhere and offer a window into how Baroque artists actually worked.
