Sandkopf

Sandkopf is a mountain in the Goldberg Group within the Hohe Tauern range, reaching 3,090 meters with gentle southwestern exposures. The rocky slopes are nearly bare, creating an open high-altitude terrain with minimal plant coverage.

Sandkopf formed during ancient tectonic activity when continental collisions thrust and folded the rock layers that now compose the Hohe Tauern range. These geological processes shaped the mountain landscape over millions of years.

The mountain forms part of the Hohe Tauern National Park, where local communities maintain traditional Alpine practices while protecting natural environments.

The route demands good navigation skills since most of the path lacks trail markings through rocky terrain. Weather conditions change rapidly at this elevation, so proper clothing and rain gear are essential.

Natural rock formations scattered across the summit create natural seating areas where hikers can rest during their journey. These stone benches offer unexpected places to pause and take in views of neighboring peaks.
