Trabrennbahn Krieau, Harness racing venue in Leopoldstadt, Austria
Trabrennbahn Krieau is a harness racing venue in the Leopoldstadt district of Vienna, built around a sand track with concrete grandstands dating to the early 20th century. The track is laid out to accommodate eight horses per starting row and is used for competitive racing throughout the year.
The site hosted an International Horse Exhibition in 1873 before it was converted into an organized harness racing venue in 1878. Since then it has operated without interruption, making it one of the oldest continuously active racing grounds in Austria.
The Majolica reliefs on the grandstand façade belong to the decorative style popular in Vienna around 1900 and are still visible to anyone walking along the track. They give the venue a character that sets it apart from a typical sports facility.
The venue sits within the Prater park and is easy to reach on foot from the Praterstern area or by public transport. Races are held mainly on weekends, so checking the current race calendar before you go will help you plan the day.
The judge's tower is a five-story steel structure with a lantern-shaped top that rises above the entire track. It is one of the few structures of its kind in Europe still standing in its original form.
