Weissenegg Castle, Medieval castle in Fernitz-Mellach, Austria.
Weissenegg is a medieval fortress in Fernitz-Mellach featuring three floors and roughly 40 rooms arranged around a square inner courtyard with columned arcades on each side. The building preserves two towers, thick supporting walls, and a chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.
The fortress was first recorded in 1284 under Chunrat von Thurn as an outpost of the Murberg fortification system. It gradually developed into an independent structure with growing strategic importance.
The west wing displays wall paintings created by F. Moser in 1784, offering insight into the artistic tastes of that era through decoration that remains visible to visitors.
Visitors should be aware that the fortress has stairs and uneven areas, requiring physical effort to explore the multi-story interior spaces. Comfortable footwear is recommended and time should be reserved to view the various wings and courtyard properly.
The eastern tower was destroyed during a 1532 Turkish raid and subsequently rebuilt with significant changes. These past damages and their architectural consequences remain visible in the structure today.
