Belvedere Palace Chapel

Belvedere Palace Chapel, Palace chapel in Belvedere complex, Vienna, Austria

The Belvedere Palace Chapel sits in the southeastern corner tower of the Upper Belvedere, featuring red-brownish marble with white surfaces and gold ornaments throughout. The room forms part of the larger palace complex and is accessible to visitors.

Architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt finished building the chapel in 1723 as a private prayer space for Prince Eugene and his inner circle. The room later opened for broader use within the palace complex.

The chapel displays a large altarpiece showing the Resurrection, which serves as the focal point when entering the space. Visitors notice the work while exploring the palace grounds.

The chapel is located within the Belvedere complex and is accessible during regular museum hours. Visitors should be aware that the room may occasionally be unavailable during private events.

The ceiling fresco by Carlo Innocenzo Carlone depicts God the Father with the Holy Spirit as a dove and Italian-style angels in a baroque arrangement. This ornate ceiling painting is a detail many visitors miss while focusing on the altarpiece below.
