Kirchbichl excavation site, Lavant

Kirchbichl is an archaeological site in Lavant where remains from different periods lie layered on a hillside. Roman buildings, Celtic temple structures, and medieval foundations can be seen stacked across the excavation levels.

The settlement began in ancient times with Celtic and later Roman structures layered over centuries. It peaked in the third century CE when people from the nearby Roman city Aguntum fled there to escape Germanic raids.

The archaeological collections at the Museums Resource Centre display tools, pottery, and artifacts that document daily activities from Roman to medieval periods.

The site remains accessible year-round and offers good views from the hilltop. A nearby museum at the base displays finds and helps visitors understand what has been uncovered.

The hilltop was naturally protected by streams on its east and west sides plus a deep gorge to the south. This location made it a valuable refuge during times of threat.
