Lovnica Monastery

Lovnica Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery in Šekovići located on a hillside beside a stream, featuring a church with a single nave, narrow narthex, and five-sided apse. The building follows traditional Orthodox monastic design and sits within a peaceful hilltop setting.

The monastery was established after 1570 when Ottoman rule allowed the restoration of the Serbian Patriarchate of Peć, with earliest documents dated to 1578. This period marked a significant moment for Serbian Orthodox communities seeking to rebuild their religious institutions.

The monastery holds handwritten and printed religious texts, including an octoechos by Božidar Vuković from 1537 printed in Venice, and contains frescoes painted by monk Longin in 1608 that decorate its interior.

The site is accessible via an asphalt road near Šekovići and holds the status of a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Visit during pleasant weather to fully appreciate the hilltop location and surrounding landscape.

The throne icon of the Holy Mother of God housed within the monastery is considered one of the finest examples of Serbian Orthodox iconography. This artwork displays remarkable technical skill and spiritual depth that distinguish it from other religious icons of its era.
