Sint-Angela-Instituut, school in Tildonk, Belgium
Sint-Angela-Instituut is a protected monument school and former monastery in Haacht spread across extensive grounds with multiple buildings, chapels, and courtyards. The complex combines Neo-Gothic and Art Deco styles with gardens featuring old trees, winding paths, ponds, and religious statues.
Founded in 1818 by Ursuline nuns as a small school, it rapidly expanded into a large monastery and educational complex. Throughout the wars of the 20th century, the school remained open and functioning while many other institutions were forced to close.
The institute is named after Saint Angela Merici, an Italian saint who founded the Ursuline order dedicated to educating girls. For many years it served as an international center, particularly welcoming English Catholic girls, and this heritage remains visible in how the community values education and religious tradition.
The grounds are enclosed by fences and gates, creating a quiet, focused environment for visitors and students. The school is easily accessible by car and offers ample parking near main roads.
The grounds have served as a filming location for several well-known Belgian films and television series, making it a hidden cinematic landmark in the country's film history. The ongoing restoration of an Art Nouveau hall demonstrates the commitment to preserving historical details for future generations.
