Built in the 10th century, the church underwent significant damage during Ottoman rule in the 19th century, with reconstruction efforts taking place from 1878 to 1880.
The interior walls display medieval frescoes with inscriptions in Medieval Greek, including depictions of saints and religious figures from different time periods.

Local historians propose that Bulgarian emperor Michael Shishman found his final resting place in this church after the Battle of Velbazhd in 1330.
