Hisarlaka Fortress, Ancient fortress near Kyustendil, Bulgaria.
Hisarlaka Fortress is a Roman military stronghold built on a hill southeast of Kyustendil, made of stone and brick walls forming an irregular polygon. Several tower bases and stretches of the outer wall are still standing, giving a clear sense of how large the original structure was.
The fortress was built by the Romans in the early 5th century to defend the region around what is now Kyustendil. It passed through several hands over the following centuries and was eventually abandoned and damaged during the Ottoman period.
The fortress displays Roman construction methods combining stone and brick in ways that show careful craftsmanship. Visitors can observe these building techniques directly when walking around the walls.
The site sits on a hill southeast of central Kyustendil and is reached by local roads from the city. Solid footwear is a good idea, since the ground is uneven and some sections of the remaining walls are in poor condition.
Alongside its main gates, the fortress was built with hidden entrances set into the walls to allow movement without being seen from outside. These concealed openings were likely used to bring in supplies or move people out quietly during a siege.
