Museum of boulders, Open-air geological museum in Minsk, Belarus
The Museum of Boulders is an open-air geological site in Minsk featuring more than 2,000 stones arranged to form a three-dimensional map of Belarus. Large rocks mark cities, while gravel pathways represent the country's rivers and water systems.
The site was established in 1985 following a five-year collection expedition started by academician Gavril Goretsky to gather geological specimens across Belarus. His initiative aimed to preserve the country's natural diversity in a distinctive way.
Several stones in the collection carry religious meaning, such as the ancient Stephen Bathory Cross and the Ded Stone from a former sacred site. Visitors can walk among these objects and observe how stones have held spiritual importance in local life.
The grounds are open 24 hours daily year-round with no admission fee. The Uruchye metro station nearby provides easy access to the site.
The museum is divided into distinct zones showcasing different geological aspects, including feeding provinces, petrographic specimens, boulder shapes, and how humans have interacted with stones over time. This arrangement allows visitors to discover the breadth of geology in a hands-on way.
