Montréal–Mirabel International Airport, International cargo airport in Mirabel, Canada
The airport northwest of Montreal features multiple runways now dedicated primarily to cargo flights and smaller charter operations. Large warehouses and hangars dominate the grounds, which cover a considerable area and remain surrounded by open fields.
The airport opened in 1975 as a new international hub for Montreal but never reached expected passenger volumes. The last scheduled passenger flight departed in 2004, after which operations shifted entirely to cargo and aerospace industries.
The airport construction required the displacement of residents from fourteen municipalities, marking a significant change in Quebec's suburban landscape.
The airport sits roughly 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of downtown Montreal and is accessible via Autoroute 15. Visitors should note that the facility primarily serves industrial and commercial purposes and no longer offers scheduled passenger services.
The original site was designed to accommodate up to 50 million passengers annually and was meant to become one of the largest airports worldwide. Today the grounds house several aerospace companies specializing in maintenance and production, making it an important industrial site.
