Tourbière-de-Shannon Ecological Reserve, Ecological reserve in Shannon, Canada
The Tourbière-de-Shannon Ecological Reserve is a protected peat bog area located northwest of Quebec City. The site covers approximately 169 hectares and features extensive wetland habitats with characteristic boggy vegetation and waterlogged soils.
The bog formed after the ice age ended over 12,500 years ago, when glacial meltwaters and ancient seas shaped the landscape. Over time, waterlogged conditions allowed thick layers of peat to accumulate and create the bog we see today.
The reserve displays how wetland ecosystems look and function in this part of Quebec. Visitors can observe the natural relationships between water, soil, and the specialized plants that thrive in boggy conditions.
The reserve is protected and access is controlled, requiring special authorization for entry. Plan your visit in advance and check with local environmental authorities about current access conditions and any guided options available.
The reserve shelters one of the largest populations of a threatened orchid species in eastern Canada. This makes the bog essential for preserving this rare plant from disappearing.
