Lunenburg Academy, Second Empire style school building in Old Town Lunenburg, Canada.
Lunenburg Academy is a wooden school building in the Second Empire style, sitting on top of Gallows Hill in the town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada. The three-story structure features a mansard roof, a large central chimney, and corner towers capped with pyramidal roofs.
The building went up in 1894 and 1895 to replace an earlier school that had burned down, at a time when Lunenburg was growing as a port town. It was one of the first schools in the region to offer more advanced classes beyond the basics taught in small rural schoolhouses.
The building sits on the highest point of town, so it was the first thing many children saw each morning as they walked to school. Today, a public library and a music school share the space, and locals still come here as naturally as generations before them did.
The building is easy to spot from most of Old Town Lunenburg since it stands on the highest point in the area. The library inside is open during regular daytime hours, and visitors are welcome to walk through the public areas.
Although the building was put up more than 130 years ago, much of its original wooden wainscoting, ornate staircases, and period hardware survives inside. Visitors walking through the public spaces can touch and examine these details up close, which is rare for a building of this age.
