Bon Echo Provincial Park, Provincial park in Lennox and Addington County, Canada.
Bon Echo is a provincial park in Lennox and Addington County, Ontario, that covers 66 square kilometers and surrounds Mazinaw Lake. The namesake Mazinaw cliff rises 100 meters (330 feet) directly from the water and stretches one and a half kilometers along the shore.
The Ontario provincial government founded the park in 1965 to protect the rock paintings and the lake environment permanently. Earlier in the 20th century, Flora MacDonald Denison operated a cultural refuge here that attracted artists and thinkers.
The cliff bears 260 Indigenous pictographs that remain visible on vertical rock faces above the water. These rock paintings show figures, animals and symbols that visitors can view from boats a few meters away.
The grounds offer more than 500 camping spots, including sites with electrical hookups, backcountry tent sites and roofed shelters available from spring through autumn. Hiking trails lead to the top of the cliff, where views open across the lake.
Boat tours bring visitors right up to the rock face, allowing the paintings to be viewed at close range. The cliff throws an echo back across the water that gave the site its name and remains clearly audible in calm conditions.
