Height of the Rockies Provincial Park, Provincial park in East Kootenay, Canada.
Height of the Rockies Provincial Park is a mountain park in the East Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada, covering rocky peaks, high plateaus, and deep valleys. The terrain includes steep ridges, open alpine areas, and several passes that connect different parts of the park.
Indigenous peoples crossed this terrain for thousands of years, using the mountain passes as travel routes between regions. European expeditions in the 19th century followed the same paths, and the area was later set aside as a protected park.
The name refers to the elevated terrain near the headwaters of several rivers that originate in this part of the Rockies. Hikers moving through the area can see how water flows in different directions from the same ridge, feeding rivers that drain toward opposite sides of the continent.
The park has very few facilities, so visitors should bring full supplies, detailed maps, and proper gear before entering. Snow can occur at higher elevations even in summer, and conditions can change quickly throughout the season.
The park is home to one of the highest concentrations of mountain goats found anywhere, living on its rocky slopes. Large herds of elk also move through the higher grassland areas, making wildlife sightings a regular part of any visit.
