Sainte-Anne-du-Bocage Chapel, Religious sanctuary in Caraquet, Canada.
Sainte-Anne-du-Bocage Chapel is a wooden structure in Caraquet featuring a three-story bell tower and Gothic Revival windows. It sits on a plateau overlooking the bay and is surrounded by walking paths, stations of the cross, and a historic cemetery with many graves.
The chapel was built between 1832 and 1836, replacing the first church that stood in the town since 1791. Land for the new structure was donated by a local benefactor, enabling its construction on this elevated site.
The chapel serves as a place of devotion to Saint Anne and draws many faithful visitors each year who come to pray and attend services here. The pilgrimages have made this site a spiritual center for the local Catholic community.
The site is accessible on foot with marked trails running through the grounds and around the chapel. Visitors should note that the uneven terrain and pathways on the plateau can be challenging, especially during poor weather conditions.
Inside the chapel, many original details have been preserved, including pine floors fastened with wooden pegs. This craftsmanship is also evident in carved holy water fonts and wrought-iron door mechanisms that have functioned for generations.
