Site du Collège de Caraquet, Educational heritage site in Caraquet, Canada
The Site du Collège de Caraquet is a memorial site featuring a bust of Saint Jean-Eudes set on a stone base salvaged from the original college foundations. The location now operates as a cultural center that serves the local community.
The college began construction in 1894 and opened in 1899 as an institution focused on French academic education. A major fire in December 1915 destroyed most structures, leaving only the stone foundation intact.
The college was the first classical educational institution in northern New Brunswick where academic studies were taught in French. For Acadians in the region, it offered rare access to higher education in their own language.
The site is located on Boulevard St-Pierre-Ouest and is openly accessible as a public memorial. Visiting is straightforward and free, making it ideal for a brief walk through local history.
The stone foundation is the only surviving original element and tells a story of resilience after disaster. These remains were overlooked for decades before being recognized as a memorial.
